Masonry & Concrete SOP Example

Brick Paver Walkway Installation

Excavate, compact base, set edge restraints, install sand bed, lay brick pavers, and fill joints.

  1. Layout, excavation & gradeStake and string the walkway perimeter at the design width plus 6" for edge restraint clearance. Excavate to a depth of 8" below the desired finished paver surface elevation — account for the 4" gravel base, 1" sand bed, and paver thickness (typically 2-3/8" for standard clay brick). Slope the excavation a minimum of 1/8" per foot away from the structure for drainage. Probe and remove any soft spots in the subgrade — fill with clean gravel and compact before proceeding. Export all excavated material and clay soil from site.
  2. Base compaction & gravel installationPlace compactable gravel base (3/4" crushed stone or processed gravel — not round pea gravel) in maximum 4" lifts. Compact each lift to 95% Proctor density using a plate compactor — minimum two passes in perpendicular directions per lift. Check compaction with a hand probe or rental compaction gauge. A well-compacted gravel base is the single most important factor in preventing settling and rocking pavers over time. After the final compaction pass, verify the base surface elevation is consistent within 1/2" across the full width using a string line or screed.
  3. Install edge restraintsSet plastic paver edge restraints along both sides of the excavated walkway, tight against the compacted gravel base. Drive 12" steel spike fasteners through the restraint at 12" intervals — spikes must fully penetrate into the compacted base to hold the restraint against lateral paver pressure. Overlap restraint sections at joints per manufacturer instructions. The edge restraints prevent the paver field from spreading over time under foot traffic and freeze-thaw cycles. If the walkway abuts a structure, the structure itself serves as the restraint on that side.
  4. Set sand bed & screedSpread 1" of coarse concrete sand (ASTM C33) over the entire base inside the edge restraints. Do not use mason's sand — it is too fine and retains moisture. Set two 1" diameter EMT conduit pipes as screed guides running the length of the walkway. Pull a 2x4 screed board across the conduit pipes to establish a consistent 1" sand bed with the correct cross-slope for drainage. Pull the conduit pipes out and fill the channels with sand by hand. Do not walk on or disturb the screeded sand bed before paver installation begins.
  5. Lay pavers in patternBegin laying clay brick pavers in a running bond pattern starting from the most visible end of the walkway (typically the house end). Lay each paver flat on the sand bed — do not rock or slide it into position after setting, as this disturbs the sand bed and creates high spots. Maintain the specified joint width (typically 1/8" to 3/16" for clay brick) using spacers or a practiced eye. Check alignment with a string line every 5–6 courses. Cut pavers for edges and corners using a wet saw with a diamond blade — score-and-snap with a splitter is acceptable for straight cuts in uniform brick.
  6. Compact, fill joints & sealAfter all pavers are laid, run the plate compactor over the entire surface — use a compactor pad to protect the paver face. Make two passes in perpendicular directions. The compaction seats all pavers firmly into the sand bed and levels any minor high spots. Spread polymeric sand across the entire surface and sweep it into all joints with a stiff push broom. Blow off excess from paver faces with a leaf blower on low setting. Lightly mist the surface with water to activate the polymer — follow the manufacturer's cure time precisely. Apply penetrating brick sealer if specified after the polymeric sand has fully cured (minimum 24 hours).
